Positive Behaviour Support, commonly referred to as PBS, is an evidence-based framework for understanding and supporting people whose behaviour others may find difficult or challenging to manage. It is grounded in the principle that behaviour, including behaviour that is distressing, aggressive, self-injurious or socially disruptive, is a form of communication. Something is being expressed. Something is being communicated. Our job is to understand what that is.
PBS does not start with restriction or management. It starts with curiosity. What is this behaviour communicating? What is the unmet need? What is the environment contributing? What skills does this person need to express themselves and meet their needs in a different way? From there, it builds proactive strategies, adjustments to the environment, changes to how the team responds, and skills development for the individual, all designed to reduce the need for the behaviour over time and improve the person's quality of life.

Positive Behaviour Support at High View Care Services is available to all clients whose presentation includes behaviours that may be difficult to support safely, whether related to acquired brain injury, mental health, co-morbidities or other complex needs.
This may include verbal or physical aggression, emotional dysregulation, behaviours that place the person or others at risk, or patterns that have contributed to previous placement breakdowns.
Many of the people we support have previously been described as too complex or too high-risk. We recognise this history, but we do not allow it to define the person. Placement breakdown can reflect an environment that was not equipped to understand or meet their needs. At High View, our specialist teams and environments are designed to provide the structure, consistency and individualised support that complex presentations require.
Our four specialist homes across South East London offer structured, therapeutic environments for adults with acquired brain injury, mental health, comorbidities and complex needs. Each one is calm, purposeful and focused on real progress and stability.
High View Care Services uses ABC records as a practical tool to understand what a client’s behaviour may be communicating. Our Trans-disciplinary Team reviews this information and implements individualised interventions to support the client, reduce distress and identify more effective ways for them to communicate their needs.
